When to Have Sex During a Clomid Treatment Cycle
You might be wondering when you’ll ovulate on Clomid. This is an important question if you want to boost your odds of pregnancy success during treatment. If you have an idea of when you will ovulate, you can time sex for your most fertile time.
there’s no one day that everyone ovulates when taking Clomid. There are Clomid calculators online that claim to tell you when you’ll ovulate, but they really are just a best guess.
That said, there are average ovulation days.1 Also, there are ways you can time sex to increase your chances of getting pregnant during treatment.

Some doctors recommend taking Clomid on Days 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 of your cycle, while others recommend taking Clomid on Days 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.
If you’re on the Day 3 to 7 protocol, this would mean you’re most likely to ovulate (on average) sometime between Day 14 and Day 17 of your cycle. To conceive, you want to have sex before you ovulate. So, you might want to have sex every day or every other day starting on Day 11 and ending on Day 18.
If you’re on the Day 5 to 9 protocol, you’re most likely to ovulate (on average) between Day 16 and 19. In this case, you’d want to start having sex every day or every other day starting on Day 13 through Day 21.
These are just averages. It’s possible you’ll ovulate earlier or later than the average. This means you could theoretically miss your most fertile time if you start having sex too early or too late.
Ovulation Predictor Tests
Your best bet to tell when you’re ovulating is to use an ovulation predictor test. If you’ve never tried an ovulation predictor test (OPK), they work a lot like pregnancy tests. You pee on a stick, and the test will indicate whether you’re in your fertile window or not.
You can start taking the OPKs the day after you finish your Clomid pills. Keep taking the tests until you get a positive result. A positive result indicates that you’re nearing ovulation and should have sex.
Start having sex every day until the OPKs are no longer positive.
Using Clomid With Injectables
Sometimes, Clomid is used together with injectable medications. The most common injectable medication is the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). This is sometimes called a trigger shot because it triggers ovulation to occur within 24 to 48 hours after injection.
That means your most fertile day will be the day of the trigger shot injection.
How does Clomid cause you to ovulate?
Clomid is a synthetic chemical that induces ovulation by fooling your body into believing that there is less estrogen. This leads to increased production of a hormone called GnRH, causing the pituitary to pump out more of another hormone called FSH and LH, thus inducing ovulation. Clomid is very powerful and induces ovulation in over 50% of all women who take it.
Clomid works well for many women but it does come with side effects like headaches, mood swings, hot flashes, weight gain, etc. It is usually given as a pill once a day for 5 days. The typical starting dosage of Clomid is 50 mg/day for 5 days, and it can be increased monthly by 50 mg a day. The first pill of Clomid is usually started 2 to 5 days after the first day of your menstrual bleeding (cycle day 2-5) and ovulation usually happens 5-9 days after the last dose of Clomid.
If you don’t bleed, and after pregnancy has been excluded, bleeding can be started by taking progesterone.
How soon after taking Clomid are you fertile?
Clomid is a synthetic chemical whose chemical name is Clomiphene citrate. It is not a fertility drug per se and is given only to induce ovulation by fooling your body into believing that there is less estrogen. Clomid is usually given for 5 days, starting on cycle days 3-5, and most women will usually ovulate 5-9 days after the last dose of Clomid.
How do you know that Clomid worked and you will ovulate?
So how do you know that Clomid has done its job? There is a clear-cut way to determine its efficacy: if you ovulate while on Clomid, that means it worked. If you did not ovulate, it did not work. Yes, it’s that simple.
How long does it take to ovulate after taking Clomid?
For women that do not ovulate on their own, the average day that ovulation occurs is about 8 to 10 days after completing a 5-day course of Clomid.
That means that a woman taking Clomid on days 5-9 will often ovulate on about day 16-20 of the cycle.
However, there is a significant variation in how long it takes to ovulate using Clomid. Some women will ovulate much later — as late as two or three weeks after the last clomiphene tablet.
